The UN has requested additional data on the water supply of the Crimea

The office of the UN High Commissioner for human rights has requested additional information about the water supply to Crimea and Ukraine's blocking of water supplies through the North Crimean canal, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Natalia Poklonskaya said.

At the end of May, the Deputy sent an appeal to High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet to condemn the actions of Kiev, which unilaterally stopped the supply of fresh water to Crimea, and take measures to resume its supply through the North Crimean canal.

"Three months later, I received an official response signed by Georgette Gagnon, Director of the office of Field operations and presence of the UN High Commissioner for human rights. The letter offers cooperation in providing additional information on the issue of access to water for Crimeans and the situation with water supply on the Peninsula, " Poklonskaya told RIA Novosti, noting that she was pleasantly surprised by the UN response and recognition of her status as a representative of Crimeans in the Russian Parliament.

According to the Deputy, she has already prepared a request to the head of the Peninsula Sergey Aksenov to provide information necessary for further interaction with the UN.

Prior to the reunification of Crimea with Russia, Ukraine provided up to 85% of the Peninsula's fresh water needs through the North Crimean canal running from the Dnieper. Then the water supply to the Republic was completely stopped unilaterally.

The issue of water supply was solved at the expense of reservoirs of natural filling, which over the past year have become significantly shallower due to low precipitation, as well as by drilling wells and extracting water from underground sources.
