Crimea's reunification with Russia in 2014 was a restoration of historical justice and opened new opportunities for the country's development. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said this on Thursday, according to the lower chamber's website.
"The decision made in the 2014 referendum restored historical justice and determined our common future. The Crimean spring united all of us, opened new opportunities for the development of our country," Volodin said. The speaker also wished the residents of Crimea happiness, success and prosperity.
As noted on his Facebook page, the head of the faction "United Russia" in the State Duma Sergey Neverov, for the time since the referendum "were imposed blockades, sanctions," but they managed to cope, "now the Crimean bridge, power bridge between Crimea and Krasnodar region, the gas pipeline "Krasnodar region - Crimea", the new terminal of the international airport Simferopol are symbols of the victory of goodness and strength of spirit." "Dozens of urgent care centers and outpatient clinics have been built, one of the pearls of Crimea "Swallow's Nest" has been restored, a new complex of the national hospital, Balaklava and Tavricheskaya TPP, the highway "Tavrida" has been built," the parliamentarian reminded.
Neverov stressed that the most important problem of the region - the shortage of freshwater - still needs to be solved. "Completion of several water intakes is in the queue", - he noted. The deputy stated that in seven years the Crimea and Sevastopol "have completed their integration into the economy of the country, including the development of its enormous tourist potential." "Much remains to be done, but Crimea has already shone in a new way," he summarized.
Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky, in turn, stressed that "all strategies for the separation of Crimea from Russia contrary to the will of the people of the peninsula awaits a cruel fiasco." "Moreover, initiatives of this kind are an encroachment on the territorial integrity of Russia's borders with all the ensuing consequences and the predictable reaction," he wrote in his Telegram channel, commenting on the recently developed in Ukraine so-called strategy of de-occupation and reintegration of Crimea and Sevastopol.
Reunification with Russia
After the coup d'état in Ukraine in February 2014, the authorities of Crimea and Sevastopol decided to hold a referendum on reunification with Russia. More than 80% of eligible voters participated in the will, which took place on March 16 of that year. 96.7% and 95.6% of residents of Crimea and Sevastopol, respectively, supported reunification with the Russian Federation. On March 18, the Russian president signed the treaty on the admission of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation, and on March 21, the document was ratified by the Federal Assembly. Despite the convincing results of the referendum, Kiev refused to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
