Russia and Iran have not yet resolved the issue of Iran's debt for the Bushehr NPP, because due to the US sanctions Tehran's funds have been blocked in banks in Japan and South Korea, but despite the unsolved problems, the personnel of the nuclear power plant work normally, Russian Ambassador to Iran Levan Dzhagaryan told RIA Novosti.
"Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to resolve the issue of Iran's debts on the Bushehr nuclear power plant," the ambassador said.
"The main reason, we are told, is that as a result of illegal unilateral US sanctions, Tehran cannot access its funds held in accounts in foreign banks, primarily in South Korea and Japan. Nevertheless, the staff at Bushehr continues to work as usual," added the senior diplomat.
The construction of the Bushehr NPP power units is considered to be the largest Russian-Iranian project. The first block of the atomic station, which was completed with the participation of Russia, was connected to the national energy system of Iran in September 2011. The amount owed for the construction of the Bushehr-2 nuclear power plant is about $500 million.
Russia supplies Iran with nuclear fuel required for the operation of the reactor of the first block. On April 29, 2020, the Russian Embassy in Iran last reported on the delivery of a fresh batch of fuel to Iran.
