Russia expects that all the remaining technical issues for the start of construction of the gas pipeline Pakistan Stream (formerly North-South) will be agreed upon in the near future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview published on Wednesday in the Pakistani newspaper The News International.
"We are making the necessary efforts to start construction of the North-South gas pipeline, a flagship project in the energy sector. We expect that in the very near future all remaining technical issues will be agreed upon," Lavrov said.
The Minister added that Russian companies are also ready to participate in the modernization of Pakistan's energy sector and railway system.
The intergovernmental agreement on the construction of the North-South gas pipeline with a length of about 1.1 thousand kilometers and a capacity of 12.4 billion cubic meters of gas per year was signed between Russia and Pakistan in October 2015. The parties were to sign commercial agreements in 2016, and the facility was planned to be commissioned by 2018, but the terms of the project have been postponed several times.
