Lavrov: the principles of cooperation in OPEC+ remain important and relevant

01 June 2022

Interaction on the basis of the principles of the OPEC+ deal remains important and relevant for Russia. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday at a press conference following his visit to Saudi Arabia.

The minister noted that he touched upon the impact of the sixth package of the EU anti-Russian sanctions on oil prices in discussions with his colleagues from the Arabian monarchies "solely as a confirmation of the agreements" within the framework of OPEC+. "The principles of interaction on this basis retain their significance and relevance," Lavrov stressed.

Earlier, the European Union agreed on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a partial embargo on Russian oil imports.

The agreement on limiting oil production between OPEC countries and 11 countries outside the cartel was signed five years ago - December 10, 2016و - against the backdrop of falling global energy prices. At that time, the parties to the agreement agreed to reduce aggregate production by 1.758 million barrels compared to the level of October 2016. The media started referring to the participants of the agreement as the OPEC+ alliance.
