The launch of direct flights between Russia and Malaysia is anticipated to significantly boost tourist traffic between the two countries, according to Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Dmitry Vakhrukov. Speaking at the international economic forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum," Vakhrukov emphasized the inevitability of this development.
"Malaysia is a very promising partner for us, a multi-million dollar country in Asia. It is necessary, of course, to establish tourist exchange. This will be based on direct flights. This, in our opinion, is an inevitability that will definitely happen. We are now working on the organizational aspects related to servicing our [aircraft] in Malaysia," Vakhrukov told TASS.
Vakhrukov mentioned that several Russian airlines are ready to commence flights soon, provided the aircraft maintenance issues are resolved. Additionally, direct flight arrangements are also being discussed with Saudi Arabia.
"In the coming years, we will focus on increasing the recognition of [Russia's] tourism brand, establishing a visa-free regime, launching direct flights and providing cashless payment for our guests. It is also desirable for us that in Saudi Arabia [Russians] have the opportunity to pay for services with cards," he said. Vakhrukov also noted that the mutual tourist flow between Russia and Saudi Arabia increased 2.5 times in 2023.
