The construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower plant will start in Kyrgyzstan on June 8. This was announced on Tuesday at the "Migration and development: prospects and new opportunities" forum in Bishkek by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the republic Akylbek Zhaparov.

"Starting June 8, we plan to begin construction of the Kambar-Ata -1 hydropower plant," he announced.

According to Zhaparov, first of all the builders will prepare the site for the construction of the facility, as well as conduct other preparatory work. According to him, the first phase will take up to five years, after which the construction of the hydropower station will begin.

The head of the cabinet specified that "some neighboring countries" are interested in the construction of the plant, but they have not yet decided to join the project. At the moment, he said, Kyrgyzstan is building without attracting investors. According to some Kyrgyz experts, the construction will require an investment of $2-5 billion.

This is not the first attempt to start construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower plant. At the beginning of the last decade, the Kyrgyz authorities signed an agreement with Russia on the joint construction of the facility, but four years later the Kyrgyz side denounced the document, citing the failure of the Russian partners to fulfill their obligations.
