Russian president Vladimir Putin thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his position on the construction of TurkStream, thanks to which Ankara feels confident during the difficulties in the European gas market.
"TurkStream, a gas pipeline system to Turkey and a transit system to southern European countries, is fully launched and operating," the Russian head of state said during talks with Erdogan on Wednesday.
"In this regard, I cannot but thank you once again for your consistent position on the construction of this pipeline system, which meets the interests of the Turkish people and Russia," Putin addressed the Turkish president. "Now, when we observe quite complicated turbulent processes in the European gas market, Turkey feels absolutely confident and stable," the Russian head of state stressed.
TurkStream is a project of a gas pipeline along the bottom of the Black Sea to supply Russian gas to Turkey and European countries. Its total length is about 1.1 thousand kilometers and total capacity is 31.5 billion cubic meters per year. The construction of the pipeline on the territory of Turkey was completed in November 2019, the official commissioning ceremony was held on January 8, 2020. The onshore branch is built by the countries of South-Eastern Europe independently, formally it is considered a continuation of TurkStream, but in fact they are separate gas distribution systems belonging to the operators of these countries.
