Russia resumes flights to Egyptian resorts

09 August 2021

Russia is resuming flights to Egyptian resorts from Monday: five flights a week to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh on each route will be operated.

Flights from Russia to Cairo, suspended since November 2015 due to the crash of a Russian airliner over the Sinai Peninsula, resumed in April 2018. Egyptian resorts, however, remained closed. Flights between Russia and Egypt were also stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. In September 2020, flights from Moscow to Cairo resumed.

In early July this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled a decree banning flights to Egyptian resorts and recommending that tour operators and travel agents refrain from selling tours to this country.

Permission for regular flights from Moscow to Egyptian resorts was received by Rossiya airline (member of Aeroflot), which will start flying from August 9. Now Egyptian Egypt Air will perform flights to the resorts in addition to Rossiya.

On August 6, Minister of Transport Vitaly Saveliev said that with an increase in the number of allowed flights other Russian airlines will also be able to fly to these destinations. Aeroflot, Pobeda, S7, Smartavia, Ural Airlines, Nordwind and Azur Air also received permits to fly to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh.
