Saudi Arabia welcomes the Yemeni leader's decision to hand over his powers to a new presidential council and promises to arrange $3 billion in aid to support Yemen's economy, the Saudi Press Agency reported Thursday.
The $2 billion will come from Riyadh and another $1 billion from the UAE, which is part of the Saudi-led military coalition. Riyadh will also contribute $300 million to the UN humanitarian aid plan for Yemen.
Earlier, Yemeni leader Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi announced the creation of a presidential leadership council. The new agency will assume the responsibilities of both the president and his deputy. It will manage the country's politics, military affairs and security during the transition period.
On April 1, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg announced that the parties to the conflict, who participated in inter-Yemen consultations under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh, had agreed to suspend hostilities for two months. Later, Mohammed Abdel Salam of Yemen's Ansar Allah (Houthis) rebel movement said that it supported the UN-announced truce.
