30 November 2021

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and Russian Lukoil CEO Vagit Alekperov discussed the development of oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea during a meeting on Monday. This was reported by the Turkmen news portal Orient.

According to its information, the Turkmen leader spoke about expanding the geography of international hydrocarbon supplies, as well as about the directions of the country's energy policy, including the promotion of investment in the infrastructure of the fuel and energy complex.

According to the portal, Alekperov briefed Berdymukhamedov on the work conducted by Lukoil in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea. The head of the Russian company also voiced a number of proposals for participation in projects to diversify the hydrocarbon sector of Turkmenistan.

In October, Berdymukhamedov and Alekperov discussed "the development of hydrocarbon resources of the Caspian region".

As the Turkmen news agency TDH reported in February, Lukoil may participate in the development of the Dostlug (Druzhba) field in the Caspian Sea. On January 21, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan signed an intergovernmental memorandum on the joint exploration and development of the field. No details of the document were given. According to sources in Baku, the field was discovered in 1986 by Azerbaijani geologists. According to available estimates, its reserves may amount to about 50 million tons of oil.
