Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov discussed with the head of Lukoil Vagit Alekperov the implementation of projects in the Caspian Sea, the Turkmen state news agency TDH reported on Wednesday night.

According to him, the meeting discussed the "development of hydrocarbon resources of the Caspian region". Alekperov briefed Berdymukhamedov on Lukoil's activities in Turkmenistan, including the progress of projects in the Caspian Sea, and confirmed interest in further cooperation and "the intention of Russian partners to take an active part in the ongoing large-scale industrial programs in Turkmenistan".

At the same time, according to the TDH, the head of Lukoil has assured the Turkmen leader that "the company he heads will continue to fulfill its obligations with full responsibility".

In turn, Berdymukhamedov noted that Turkmenistan is always open for productive cooperation in the field of fuel and energy, "where there is huge resource and economic potential".

In February, the TDH reported that Lukoil could participate in the development of Dostlug (Druzhba) field in the Caspian Sea. On January 21, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan signed an intergovernmental memorandum on joint exploration and development of the field. No details of the document were given. According to sources in Baku, the field was discovered in 1986 by Azerbaijani geologists. According to available estimates, its reserves may amount to about 50 million tons of oil.
