UAE Sees Political and Economic Advantages in Joining BRICS

18 January

Abu Dhabi considers its participation in the BRICS group as both politically and economically advantageous, according to Abdullah bin Touq al-Marri, the United Arab Emirates' Minister of Economy.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Minister al-Marri expressed his belief that joining BRICS would yield substantial benefits on the geopolitical and global economic fronts. He highlighted the potential for the UAE's involvement to play a pivotal role in international cooperation, particularly with nations in the global south.

The minister emphasized that UAE's membership in BRICS would enhance the inflow of investments into the country's economy. Al-Mari noted the UAE government's active participation in the establishment of the New BRICS Development Bank, contributing to the development of investment infrastructure in the region.

"We look forward to building bridges between our countries, friends, and colleagues in BRICS, and look forward to the interaction that is needed to coordinate economic policies on a global scale," he emphasized.

The BRICS group, originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later South Africa in 2011, has expanded with six new members in August 2023, including Argentina. However, Argentina declined to join in late December. As of January 1, the five new members—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—commenced their full-fledged work in BRICS under the chairmanship of Russia.
