Lavrov: Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Should Have Been Resolved Earlier, Despite US Obstruction

13 February

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized the handling of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, stating that it should have been addressed and resolved earlier in its stages. Lavrov made this assertion during the XIII Middle East Conference of the Valdai Club, where he pointed out that the United States had obstructed a ceasefire resolution in the UN Security Council.

"We must acknowledge that it was essential to address this conflict promptly. Following the Hamas attack on October  15, we submitted a proposal to the Security Council for a ceasefire resolution just one week later," Lavrov said. "Unfortunately, this proposal was thwarted by the United States. Subsequently, the United Arab Emirates and other Security Council members attempted to push forward the same resolution, but they ultimately fell short. They managed to pass a weak text that merely called for a humanitarian pause instead of a full ceasefire," Lavrov added.

Additionally, the Russian foreign minister expressed disappointment with the Security Council's response to the conflict, noting that it had conveyed its position less forcefully than the General Assembly, which had passed a resolution advocating for a ceasefire.
