Federation Council Delegation to Monitor Azerbaijan's Presidential Election

A delegation from the Federation Council, led by Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin, will observe the presidential election in Azerbaijan, the press service of the upper house of parliament announced.

 

The statement details that from February 5 to 8, senators will be involved in the observation of the extraordinary presidential election of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Federation Council delegation will be spearheaded by Grigory Karasin, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.

 

The parliamentarians will travel to Azerbaijan via observer missions from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS (IPACIS). The delegation will also include First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education, and Culture, Ilyas Umakhanov; Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Self-Government, and Northern Affairs, Anatoly Shirokov; and member of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, Alexander Bashkin.

 

The extraordinary presidential elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for February 7, 2024. There are seven candidates vying for the position of the head of state, including incumbent President Ilham Aliyev. Five of the candidates are backed by political parties, while two are self-nominated. The president of Azerbaijan is elected for a seven-year term, with no term limits. The last presidential elections in Azerbaijan took place on April 11, 2018.
