Federation Council ratifies agreement to extend START Treaty until February 5, 2026

The Federation Council on Wednesday unanimously ratified the agreement, submitted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, to extend until February 5, 2026, the Treaty between Russia and the United States on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START, also referred to as START III). The vote was cast by 148 members of the Federation Council.

 

 

Last Tuesday, the US and Russian sides exchanged notes on the extension of START. In their note, the US Embassy in Russia proposed, in accordance with the provisions of the treaty, to extend it "for a period of five years until February 5, 2026." The Russian Foreign Ministry, for its part, confirmed "the acceptability of this proposal for the Russian Federation". Earlier on Wednesday, the State Duma unanimously voted to ratify the agreement.
