Gatilov: Efforts to Promote the Russian Language in International Organizations Persist

01 December 2023

The Permanent Mission of Russia in Geneva places significant emphasis on promoting the Russian language, one of the official languages of the UN, within international organizations. Gennady Gatilov, the head of the Permanent Mission, affirmed in an interview with TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman that this effort will be continued.

"The effort to promote and defend the Russian language has always been one of the main priorities and will continue to be so in the future," the diplomat said.

The Palais des Nations in Geneva, housing the UN office, featured concerts commemorating the anniversaries of Chaliapin and Rachmaninoff this year. The events held on the occasion of the International Day of the Russian Language, celebrated annually on June 6, garnered significant popularity.

"These events are gaining a significant audience. Many are interested in the Russian language, recognize the importance of Russian culture globally, and believe that Russian culture should not be suppressed," Gatilov said. "Attendance at such gatherings is substantial," - he continued. - "More UN halls are filling up, and we are pleased about it. We are glad that people, despite attempts to influence them with anti-Russian narratives, are not inclined to accept it. Those who think objectively attend our events and applaud. Artists at our concerts receive applause."

Despite the fact that previously "all this was put on a broad footing, unfortunately, our opportunities in this regard have somewhat narrowed," noted the diplomat. He added, "The Swiss authorities are pursuing a similar, essentially discriminatory policy to the EU regarding visa issuance." "We have consistently expressed that, regrettably, Switzerland is deviating from its neutral position. This has practical implications. This year, the groups we intended to involve in the celebration of the Day of the Russian Language were unable to come," - Gatilov explained. - "However, we are exploring alternative methods to promote the Russian language using modern technologies. Specifically, we are organizing virtual celebrations of the Day of the Russian language, with theater groups participating in them."

Several events have already been planned for 2024. "Russian colleagues are providing assistance, and we have good ties with the fund of social initiatives 'Peace and Harmony,' led by Elmira Shcherbakova. They help us significantly in organizing these events and bring artists here whenever possible," Gatilov stressed.

He also highlighted the efforts with fellow countrymen in Geneva. "We are actively involved in this. There is a significant number of compatriots here. It's worth mentioning that they willingly initiate contacts and take the lead in organizing events we participate in. To the best of our ability, we assist them in hosting these events," the Russian ambassador concluded.
