The agreement between Russian and US leaders Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden on a meeting is global in its prospects and significance, Federation Council Vice-Speaker Konstantin Kosachev said.
"The most important thing is a possible face-to-face meeting in the coming months, as well as for instructions to departments and aides to prepare it thoroughly. This is not just news of the day. It is global news in terms of scale, significance and prospects," the senator wrote on Facebook.
As the parliamentarian stressed, the hardest work lies ahead. "It would be wrong to downplay the problems. But when there are formats to discuss them, to converge positions, or at least to better understand each other's concerns and intentions, it's already a lot," he said.
According to Kosachev, the fact that it was Biden who called Putin is "indicative in every sense, especially in the recent turmoil".
The conversation between the Russian and US presidents shows a desire to "clear" the bilateral agenda, Konstantin Kosachev added.
"It is a mutual desire to clear, as much as possible, the bilateral agenda so as not to create unnecessary obstacles in the joint work," the senator wrote on Facebook.
Kosachev said the conversation also demonstrates a mutual willingness to discuss all the issues that have accumulated in the interest of strategic stability. "A very important step forward," he said.
He noted that another important point of the conversation between the presidents is "fixing differences, but without dramatizing them."
