Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that various structures from regions of the Global South could join the G20 (Group of Twenty) on equal terms, similar to the African Union. He made this proposal at a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, discussing the G20's role in addressing current international tensions.
"Last year, at the leaders' summit in New Delhi, we agreed on the importance of strengthening global institutions by amplifying the voices of developing countries, the majority of the world. The African Union has since joined our ranks. I believe we should build on this progress by inviting leading integration structures from other regions of the global South to participate equally in our work," Lavrov stated.
The Russian Foreign Minister also proposed that the G20 should advocate for a fair reform of the UN Security Council. "We affirm our support for the candidacies of Brazil and India, while ensuring the interests of African countries," Lavrov added.
