Patrushev: Russia to Foster CIS Integration During Its Presidency

08 November 2023

Moscow, as it assumes the chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2024, will work to enhance integration among its member states, stated Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev during a meeting with his CIS counterparts in the Russian capital.

"An important aspect of our work is to bolster the potential and elevate the international influence of the CIS. As the upcoming chair, we will endeavor to reinforce integration bonds for the collective benefit of all member states. This effort will, in turn, promote the secure and stable development of our respective nations," he emphasized.

Patrushev further added that considering the present circumstances, it is important for CIS countries to concentrate on a shared objective: enhancing collective security to safeguard socio-political and economic stability.

"I am confident that Russia's leadership in the CIS in 2024 will significantly contribute to the realization of these objectives. We must prioritize the meticulous execution of the interstate program of joint measures to combat crime for 2024-2028, as well as the program for cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism for 2023-2025, among other documents endorsed within the CIS framework," emphasized the secretary of the Russian Security Council.

He also emphasized the importance of upholding the practice of collaborative efforts to identify and dismantle drug trafficking routes and illegal arms trade. He suggested that it would be beneficial to extend cooperation in these areas to include specialized units of the United Nations, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, along with other relevant international organizations and associations, Patrushev asserted.
