Putin and Niger's Leader Discuss Sahel Situation and Combating Terrorism

26 March

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Niger's National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland head Abdourahmane Tchiani recently held a phone conversation to discuss the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region, focusing on coordination efforts in the fight against terrorism, as reported by the Kremlin press service.

During their discussion, Putin and Tchiani emphasized the importance of coordinated actions in security and counter-terrorism matters within the Sahara-Sahel region. The two leaders also expressed their desire to strengthen political dialogue and foster mutually beneficial cooperation between Moscow and Niamey.

Tchiani assumed leadership in July, following the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum by the military from the presidential guard. The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, tasked with promoting political dialogue in Niger, was established to govern the country.

In their bilateral discussion, both leaders agreed on the need to intensify political dialogue and develop cooperation in various fields. Tchiani expressed solidarity with the Russian people in connection with the recent terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall, offering deep condolences for the numerous victims of this heinous act.
