Russian Ambassador Believes Ethiopia and Somalia Will Resolve Conflict Internally

20 February

Ethiopia and Somalia will be able to resolve the crisis surrounding the signing of a memorandum with Somaliland without external interference, Russian Ambassador to Addis Ababa Evgeny Terekhin said in an interview with TASS.

"This matter should be resolved between the two countries; I am sure they will find a mutually acceptable solution," he stated.

Terekhin clarified that, as of now, neither country has sought Russia's involvement, and Russia is not imposing itself as a mediator. He indicated that if either Ethiopia or Somalia requests assistance or support, Russia will consider it, but there have been no such requests thus far.

Tensions between Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia escalated following the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding between Addis Ababa and the unrecognized Somaliland. The memorandum aimed to facilitate Ethiopia's access to seaports, leading Somali authorities to express opposition, citing concerns about sovereignty violations. Mass demonstrations in Mogadishu have denounced the memorandum, with several countries, including the US and Egypt, reaffirming their commitment to Somalia's territorial integrity.
