21 January 2021

Moscow hopes that the new US administration will pursue a more balanced course and not escalate the confrontation with Russia. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said this at a briefing on Thursday.

"We hope that the new team in the White House will pursue a more balanced course, not aggravating the already excessively confrontational, and through no fault of our own, Russian-American relations," she said.

The diplomat expressed hope that the new US administration would respond to Moscow's earlier proposals. Zakharova reminded that they include the establishment of a business advisory and expert council, a joint statement on the inadmissibility of nuclear war and strengthening of strategic stability, exchange of letters with commitments of non-interference in each other's internal affairs, launch of bilateral expert talks on the Libyan crisis and convening of the 'quartet' of international mediators on the Middle East settlement at the ministerial level.

The inauguration ceremony for the 46th US President Joseph Biden took place in Washington on Wednesday.
