Russia will proceed from the logic of US law, recognizing the results of the presidential elections in the United States: it is necessary to wait for the official results. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said this on Monday in an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio station.
"We have to wait for the official results of the elections," she said, answering a question about Moscow's recognition of the voting results in the United States. "We proceed from the fact that after the counting in the states an important date comes - December 14, when the voting of the members of the electoral college formally takes place. Then, on January 6, 2021, a meeting of the Congress of the new convocation should be held to formally count the votes and approve the voting results of the electors for each state," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry explained.
Zakharova noted that currently the second candidate - current US President Donald Trump - has not expressed his agreement with the election results. "Accordingly, it seems that we have to follow [...] the logic of the American laws," she added.
According to her, Russia is ready to work with any candidate who will lead the US according to the voting results. "It is the choice of the American people or the choice of the people where the elections are held. We assume that we will work with those candidates, with those political forces that will be elected in this or that country. We have our priorities in building relationships, that's a fact. But personalities are still the choice of the people who vote for them," she said, answering a question about a more preferable candidate for Russia.
The general election in the United States took place on November 3. According to forecasts by leading US media, Democratic candidate Joseph Biden received 270 votes, which is necessary for him to be elected to the highest office. The politician has already announced his victory. Trump has not admitted defeat and intends to appeal to the courts, because, in his opinion, there were numerous violations during the elections.
