Law enforcement officers detained two participants in an attack on soldiers near the village of Chervlennaya in Chechnya's Shelkovsky district in 1999. They were members of the Basayev and Khattab gangs, the FSB Public Relations Center (PRC) told TASS on Monday.

"The Federal Security Service, in cooperation with the Investigative Committee and the Russian Interior Ministry, with the power support of the Russian Federal Guard, and guided by the principle of inevitability of punishment, detained Aslanbek Idalov and Salambek Idalov, natives of the Chechen Republic, who were members of the Basayev and Khattab gangs fighting with servicemen of the Russian Defense Ministry near the village of Chervlennaya in 1999," the FSB noted.

The detainees were taken to investigators of the Investigative Committee.

The detention was conducted in the framework of the criminal case initiated by the Investigation Committee under Articles 209 ("Banditry"), 279 ("Armed Mutiny"), 317 ("Attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer") of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The FSB emphasized that the search for participants of crimes of terrorist nature of the past years, who escaped criminal responsibility, continues.

As the IC press service informed the journalists, at the request of the investigation, due to the special gravity of the crimes committed, the court chose the measure of restraint in the form of detention. Also, the investigation establishes the role and specific actions taken by the suspects in the attack on the military. "Their involvement in the commission of other crimes unrelated to that criminal case is being verified," the IC noted.

On October 4, 1999, during the battle with militants near Chervlennaya village of Shelkovsky district of Chechnya 15 servicemen were killed and 28 servicemen were wounded.
