Federal Security Service officers detained in Crimea a citizen of Ukraine suspected of participating in the activities of the illegal armed formation "Crimean Tatar volunteer battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan," the press service of the FSS for Crimea and Sevastopol told reporters on Thursday.
"Employees of the FSS of Russia in the Republic of Crimea detained a Ukrainian citizen born in 1971, who is suspected of participating in the activities of the illegal armed formation "Crimean Tatar volunteer battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan", acting in a foreign country for purposes contrary to the interests of the Russian Federation. It was found that the detainee, being in the illegal armed group, provided the battalion with material resources, uniforms and food. In addition, he has repeatedly participated in anti-Russian actions on the territory of the Genicheskiy district, including during a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine", the message reads.
It is specified that the suspect was detained in March while crossing the state border of Russia under the guise of a refugee. "The investigative department of the FSS of Russia in the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol has initiated a criminal case against the detainee under Part 2 of Article 208 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The article provides for up to 15 years of imprisonment. Currently, the Kiev district court of Simferopol chose a preventive measure for him in the form of detention for two months", the press release says.
It is also reported that "the investigative department of the FSS is conducting a complex of investigative measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the criminal activities of the detainee".
According to the FSS, the detainee was the head of one of the Ukrainian cells of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, which is banned in the Russian Federation. It is specified that the person involved in the case arrived to the Crimean peninsula to obtain a Russian passport.
