Abbas Calls UN Security Council's Adoption of Gaza Resolution a Step in the Right Direction

11 June

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas characterized the UN Security Council's (UNSC) adoption of a resolution on the Gaza Strip truce as a step in the right direction and urged the international community to consider its implementation responsibly. This statement from Abbas' office was released by the WAFA news agency.

“The Palestinian president welcomes the adoption of the UNSC resolution on Gaza and considers it a step in the right direction that will help stop the war against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” the document reads. Abbas emphasized that the resolution's text includes not only a ceasefire in the enclave but also “the recognition of Gaza as an integral part of the State of Palestine.”

The head of the Palestinian National Authority stressed that realizing the two-state principle through political means will require “responsible and serious work” from the international community, but will eventually lead “to the end of the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestine in accordance with international law.”

On June 10, the UN Security Council adopted a U.S. draft resolution to support a new truce proposal between Israel and Hamas. Fourteen of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the document, while Russia abstained from voting.

The US-proposed resolution consists of seven points, the first of which calls for Hamas to accept the agreement and “calls on all parties to fully implement its provisions without conditions or delay.” Additionally, the document emphasizes that if consultations on the truce drag on for more than six weeks, “the ceasefire will remain in effect as long as negotiations are ongoing.” The resolution also calls on all UN member states to support the implementation of the agreement and reaffirms the commitment to resolving the conflict between Israel and Palestine based on the peaceful coexistence of two states.
