UN General Assembly to Hold May Session Honoring WWII Victims

31 March

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will convene a special session in May to honor the memory of all victims of World War II, according to Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department of International Organizations.

"The centerpiece of the UN's New York agenda will be a commemorative General Assembly session during the second week of May, dedicated to all those who perished in World War II," Logvinov told TASS. He noted that this initiative was established under a resolution adopted by consensus on March 4, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II.

"Moving forward, these commemorative sessions will be held every five years," he added.

Logvinov emphasized the deep connection between the 80th anniversary of the war's end and the founding of the UN, stating that this theme should run through all upcoming commemorative events. "The defeat of Nazism—where our country played a decisive role—laid the foundation for a new international order, with the United Nations at its core," he said.
