21 June 2023

The 20th international meeting on Syria, which is taking place in the capital of Kazakhstan, will be the last within the framework of the Astana format, Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kanat Tumysh told the plenary session.

"We've decided to officially declare the 20th international meeting on Syria as the last in the framework of the Astana format. We proposed to include this decision in a joint statement," he said.

An international meeting on Syria in the Astana format is taking place June 20-21 in Astana. Delegations from guarantor countries - Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as representatives of the Syrian government and opposition are taking part in the talks. Representatives of the UN, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are expected to participate as observers.

Negotiations on Syria in Astana were first held in January 2017. All other meetings were held there, except for the two when the negotiators met in Sochi. The UN, Jordan and the US were observers of the negotiation process (the US withdrew in May 2018), and Iraq and Lebanon joined in August 2019.
