Tunisian President appoints Ambassador to Syria

28 April 2023

Tunisian President Kais Saied on Thursday appointed his country's ambassador to Syria, Tunis Afrique Presse reported.

According to its reports, Saied presented his credentials to Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tunisia to the Syrian Arab Republic Mohamed Mhedbi in a ceremony in Carthage. Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar also attended the event.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad visited Tunisia last week. The two sides discussed resuming diplomatic relations between the two countries and ways of developing cooperation. As a result of the talks Tunisia and Syria adopted a joint statement. The document noted an agreement to intensify bilateral contacts to explore issues of mutual interest in a joint commission. Tunisia said it reaffirmed its position in support of Syria's return as a member of the Arab League.

Tunisia and Syria decided to work to renew economic cooperation, especially in priority areas, strengthen consular and humanitarian and security cooperation, including in the fight against terrorism, organized crime and human trafficking.

Tunisia severed diplomatic relations with Syria shortly after the outbreak of armed conflict in that country about 10 years ago. In February of this year, the Tunisian president announced a decision to raise the level of diplomatic representation in Damascus and appoint an ambassador. Syria responded by reopening its diplomatic mission in Tunisia and also sending an ambassador.
