Egypt's Leader Demands for an End to Collective Punishment of Palestinians

16 October 2023

During a meeting with French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi strongly emphasized the necessity for Israeli authorities to refrain from implementing collective punishment measures against the residents of the Gaza Strip. El-Sisi expressed his concerns regarding the escalation of tensions in the Gaza conflict and the Israeli authorities' policy, which results in collective punishment for the civilian population of the Strip. This policy includes the blockade of the enclave, limited food supplies, and the forced displacement of Palestinians.

El-Sisi's office issued a statement highlighting his belief that the international community should take responsibility for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave. He called for the provision of emergency aid to the people of the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian leader also noted his ongoing coordination with French President Emmanuel Macron in recent days to work towards reestablishing peace and security in the region.
