Indonesian President Expresses Interest in Joining BRICS

29 October

Indonesia's new president, Prabowo Subianto, announced his intent for the country to join the BRICS coalition.

“We believe Indonesia should participate in this format (BRICS),” Prabowo stated, as reported by the Tempo portal. “We aim to be present in all forums. Indonesia does not align exclusively with any particular bloc but strives to be everywhere.” He highlighted the significant economies within BRICS and noted that several neighboring countries have already joined.

In October 2023, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo mentioned that Indonesia was considering joining BRICS, potentially in 2024 or 2025, though he emphasized that the country would not rush into the decision.

On October 25, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Jakarta’s representatives, participating in the BRICS Plus outreach during the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, reaffirmed Indonesia's interest in becoming part of the alliance.
