The Jordanian Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that it has begun vaccinating against the coronavirus with the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
"The ministry began giving the Russian Sputnik V vaccine to citizens who signed up through a special website," Kamel Abu Sil, Director of the Jordanian Ministry of Health's National Vaccination Program, told Radio Hala.
The vaccine will now be available to all citizens over the age of 45, he said.
New shipments of Pfizer vaccine are expected to arrive on Sunday and Chinese vaccine on Monday, the official said.
More than 626,000 cases of COVID-19 infection have been identified in Jordan since the pandemic began, and more than 7,100 infected people have died.
A mass vaccination campaign was launched in the kingdom on January 13. A coronavirus vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinopharm and a Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine were approved for use. In March 2021, the Jordanian regulator approved the emergency use of the Russian Sputnik V.
