Lavrov says he will convey Putin's assessments on international issues to Jordan's king

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a visit to Amman that he will convey Russian President Vladimir Putin's assessments on a number of international issues to Jordan's King Abdullah II.

The Russian foreign minister described the meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi as "very and very useful and timely" at a press conference following it on Thursday. "We also have an audience with his majesty the king after this event is over. And I mean to convey to his majesty special wishes and assessments of some of the world's problems from the president of the Russian Federation [Vladimir] Putin," he said.

US sabotaging Quartet activities

Russia and Jordan noted the counterproductiveness of US attempts to sabotage the activities of the Middle East Quartet (Russia, US, UN, European Union), causing the work of the format to stand idle.

"[We] stated the importance of activating the efforts of the international community for settling the Arab-Israeli conflict. For our part, we stressed the counterproductiveness of the United States' attempts to sabotage the activities of the Quartet of international mediators, which is a unique, legitimate diplomatic mechanism for the Middle East settlement, which was approved by the UN Security Council and which is now basically idle, as they say, because of the US position," Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister also said he discussed the situation in Iraq with his Jordanian counterpart. "We confirmed from both sides the importance of using a comprehensive national dialogue to achieve a broad inter-Arab agreement on the main issues of the domestic political agenda against the background of persistent challenges," Lavrov said.

Arab League summit

Jordan's Foreign Minister briefed Russia on the outcome of the Arab League (LAS) summit in Algiers, and Moscow welcomed the decisions made there.

"We were told how the Arab League summit, which ended yesterday in Algiers, was held. Our Jordanian friends briefed us on the decisions of this forum, which we welcomed, and for the most part our positions are the same or very close with regard to all the issues touched on in the Arab League summit declaration," the Russian diplomatic chief said.

According to Lavrov, Moscow and Amman reaffirmed their commitment to the universally recognized international legal basis for the Middle East settlement. "First of all, this refers to the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, as well as the Arab Peace Initiative," the minister added.

The Russian foreign minister also noted the role of King Abdullah II of Jordan in ensuring the rights of representatives of all confessions in Jerusalem.
