Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a meeting with Taher al-Baour, the Acting Foreign Minister of Libya's Government of National Unity, expressed his hope for the attainment of a comprehensive inter-Libyan agreement to effectively navigate the challenges of the transition phase.
"In the discussions on the evolving situation in Libya, Russia underscored its steadfast commitment to continue supporting the sustainable stabilization of the country. The significance of an inclusive national dialogue, aimed at safeguarding the territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty of Libya, was highlighted. In this regard, Russia expressed its hope for a broad inter-Libyan agreement essential for successfully addressing the tasks of the transitional period, including the preparations for national elections," stated a press release from the Russian Foreign Ministry following the meeting.
The conversation also touched upon the necessity of solidifying international backing for the Libyan people in advancing the political process, with the United Nations playing a pivotal role. Furthermore, both parties affirmed their shared interest in initiating and fortifying a multifaceted, mutually beneficial business partnership.
The talks took place in New York on the sidelines of the UN Security Council's open debate on multilateral cooperation for a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable world order.
