The Director of Israel’s Shin Bet (General Security Service), Ronen Bar, made a secret visit to Cairo on Sunday, where he met with Egypt’s intelligence chief, Abbas Kamel. This was reported by the news portal Walla.
During the talks between the intelligence heads, one of the key topics was the stalled negotiations on a hostage deal, according to a source familiar with the content of the visit, as noted by the news outlet. Bar discussed with Kamel possible ways to revive negotiations on the hostage issue, particularly as the leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, has resumed contacts with the organization’s representatives in Doha, and through them, with Qatari and Egyptian mediators.
The Shin Bet chief also addressed the ongoing crisis following the closure of the Rafah crossing two months ago, which has strained relations between Israel and Egypt. Walla added that Shin Bet's office declined to comment on the meeting.
