Media Reports: Terrorist Who Attacked Iranian Mausoleum Trained at IS Camp in Afghanistan

16 August 2023

According to sources, a Tajikistani citizen named Rakhmatullah Nuruzov, who carried out the attack on the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz, Iran, had undergone a three-month training program in an Islamic State (IS) camp. He was reportedly recruited by terrorists through online communication and then traveled to Turkey to officially join the banned group. Following his recruitment, Nuruzov was sent to Afghanistan, where he received three months of training in a specialized IS extremist camp. Subsequently, he entered Iran and carried out the terrorist attack on the Shah Cheragh mausoleum.

Iranian authorities are actively investigating how such terrorists manage to enter the country. There are concerns that there might be networks or groups within the republic that assist radicals in infiltrating Iran. According to reports, Nuruzov initially intended to carry out the attack during Ashura, a religious mourning period that took place from July 19 to July 28 this year, but he later adjusted his plans to target visitors at the mausoleum during prayers.

On August 13, a terrorist attack occurred at the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz, Fars Province. Two militants attempted to enter the mosque, and one of them opened fire with an assault rifle, leading to casualties. Security forces managed to detain the attacker shortly after the incident. Reports indicate that one person was killed in the attack, and eight others sustained injuries.
