Russia positively evaluates the decision of the parties to the conflict in Yemen to extend the ceasefire regime in the country for two more months, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Friday.
"We welcome the June 2 decision of the internationally recognized government of the Republic of Yemen and the Houthis movement Ansar Allah to extend the ceasefire in the country for two more months, until August 2 this year, under the same conditions," she said.
As Zakharova pointed out, the Russian MFA noted that "both parties to the conflict have managed to show the necessary political will and flexibility in dealing with the existing differences." "We note with satisfaction that for the duration of the ceasefire the humanitarian situation has significantly improved," the diplomat noted.
In Yemen, the standoff between government forces and rebel Houthis has been ongoing since August 2014. It reached its most active phase when the Saudi-led coalition invaded the country in March 2015. The conflict led to a massive humanitarian crisis. According to the UN, more than 24 million Yemenis (about 80% of the population) are in need of humanitarian assistance, and the number of internally displaced persons exceeds 4 million.
