UN Court Considers Occupation of Palestinian Territories as Annexation

19 July

The UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) has determined that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories amounts to de facto annexation. This was stated by Presiding Judge Nawaf Salam while delivering an advisory opinion on the matter.

"The [Israeli] policies and actions are calculated to have an irreversible impact on the ground and to remain in force indefinitely," - Judge Salam said. -  "Consequently, the court finds that these policies and actions amount to annexation of a substantial part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory."

The ICJ also concluded that Israel's actions violate the Palestinians' right to self-determination.

"As a result of Israel's policies and actions over decades, the Palestinian people have been deprived of the right to self-determination, and the continued continuation of these policies and actions undermines the future realization of this right," - the court stated. - "Accordingly, the court finds that Israel is in breach of its obligation to respect the Palestinian people's right to self-determination."
