The UN announced the first cases of the coronavirus infection in camps in North-Eastern Syria

The first cases of the coronavirus infection were confirmed in two refugee camps in North-Eastern Syria, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock said at a meeting of the Security Council.

"On August 27, the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 appeared among residents of the al-Hawl and al-Arisha camps in the North-East of the country," he said. "Five health workers who are in the al-Hawl camp have also tested positive for the coronavirus in recent weeks."

Lowcock recalled that two-thirds of the 65,000 refugees in al-Hawl are children from 60 countries. "This situation needs to be dealt with much more seriously than it was before, and children should be treated first and foremost as victims of the conflict," he stressed.
