Tajikistan and Russia Discuss Changes to Bilateral Agreement on Migration

29 May

Representatives from Tajikistan and Russia convened in Dushanbe for the second round of comprehensive negotiations on migration issues, focusing on amendments to their intergovernmental agreement. The discussions were reported by the press center of Tajikistan's Interior Ministry.

The parties reviewed a draft protocol to amend the 2019 agreement between the two governments concerning the organized recruitment of Tajik citizens for temporary labor in the Russian Federation. Participants provided proposals and recommendations to improve the draft. They also discussed the legal status of labor migrants, coordination of statistical data on labor migration, the organized departure of migrants for labor in Russia, and expanding cooperation on developing primary and secondary vocational education systems.

The talks were chaired by Tajik Interior Minister Ramazon Rakhimzoda and Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, and attended by Tajik Minister of Labor, Migration, and Employment Gulnora Hasanzoda.

Earlier reports indicated that the Interior Ministers of both countries had a bilateral meeting to address migration issues and the protection of Tajik citizens' rights in Russia. They also discussed strengthening cooperation in combating crime and preventing the involvement of Tajik citizens in illegal activities and movements. Kolokoltsev was received by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, with whom he discussed law enforcement and migration cooperation.

During his visit to Moscow on May 8-9, President Rahmon suggested to Russian President Vladimir Putin that they discuss migration issues. Following this meeting, Rahmon's press service announced that high-ranking delegations from both countries would hold talks on the topic in the near future.
