Putin promoted Sergei Surovikin, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, to the rank of Army General

Russian President Vladimir Putin has promoted Colonel General Sergei Surovikin, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces (RAF), to the rank of Army General. The decree was published on Monday on the official portal of legal information.


"To grant the military rank of Army General to Sergei Vladimirovich Surovikin," the document reads.


Surovikin was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces in 2017. He became the first all-arms commander in the history of Russia and the USSR to head the Aerospace Forces (Air Force) of Russia and the USSR. He graduated from Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command Academy and the Frunze Academy and the General Staff Academy. He served in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Chechnya. Since October 2013, he has been the commander of the troops of the Eastern Military District, and since March 2017 he has been the head of the Russian troop grouping in Syria.
