EEU countries discuss energy corridor project from Russia through Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan

26 May 2022

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) countries started discussing the possibility of building an energy corridor - a direct current line from Russia to Kyrgyzstan through Kazakhstan. This was announced by Nikolay Shulginov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation at the Eurasian Economic Forum.

"Another interesting project that we started discussing in Kyrgyzstan and brought to the coordination council is the construction of an extended (direct current) line from Siberia to Kyrgyzstan via Kazakhstan. This will increase the exchange of power between the EEU," he said.

Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia are planning to form a common electric energy market of the Eurasian Economic Union by January 1, 2025, through the integration of national electricity markets. One of the conditions for such a process is the observance of the balance of economic interests of producers and consumers.

At the moment each member of the EEU independently forms its own energy balance based on internal needs. With the transition to a single market, the systems will be able to work by complementing each other.
