Authorities in the southwestern Afghan province of Nimroz, appointed by the radical Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) who have seized power in the country, have imposed a ban on the use of foreign currency in the region. This was reported on Wednesday by the Afghan TV channel Ariana News, citing a local police representative.
According to the security chief of the Nimroz police Muhammad Muhajer, the residents of the province use mainly Iranian toman currency in their daily life, as the region borders with the Islamic republic. According to the TV channel, for many years residents of Afghanistan's border provinces have used foreign currency. For example, in Nimroz almost 80% of cross-border trade is carried out in Iranian tomans.
A local police representative added that the decision to limit this practice was made two days ago, noting that violators will be dealt with seriously and legally. Muhajer did not specify what sanctions await those who continue to use foreign currency for economic transactions.
In December 2021 Aamaj News reported that the Taliban had banned the purchase and sale of US dollars due to the sharp depreciation of afghanis (Afghanistan's national currency). At the same time, last October, the Central bank of Afghanistan issued a decree, according to which all trade operations in the country should be carried out only in afghanis.
