Rosatom to Launch First Small Hydropower Plant in Kyrgyzstan by 2025

25 March

Rosatom plans to inaugurate Kyrgyzstan's first small hydropower plant on the Chandalash River, boasting a capacity of 24 MW, by 2025, Kyrgyz Deputy Energy Minister Talaibek Baigaziev said during the Atomexpo forum.

"The launch is projected for next year. The estimated cost stands at around $1,000 per kilowatt of capacity. Rosatom will finance the project independently, with subsequent joint operation facilitated through tariff returns, without relying on state loans," Baigaziev explained.

Rosatom's ambitious agenda includes the construction of numerous small hydropower plants across Kyrgyzstan, with a combined capacity reaching up to 400 MW. An agreement to develop and implement small hydropower projects in Kyrgyzstan was formalized during the Atomexpo forum by Rusatom Service JSC (a division of Rosatom's power sector), the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy, and Rosatom's Kyrgyzstan office. The agreement aims to foster a mutually beneficial partnership in constructing multiple hydroelectric power plants in regions such as Talas, Jalal-Abad, Batken, and beyond.
