Rosselkhoznadzor will consider imposing a ban on the import of vegetable products from the Turkish provinces of Trabzon and Hatay because of the Pepino mosaic virus and other quarantine objects, the agency said in a statement.
"Rosselkhoznadzor was forced to impose a ban on the import of tomatoes and peppers produced and/or exported from the provinces of Antalya and Izmir from December 11, 2020. However, Pepino mosaic, tomato brown wrinkle and tomato spotted wilt (tomato bronze blight) viruses have also been detected in products from the provinces of Trabzon and Hatay. At the moment we are talking about isolated cases, however, if the situation becomes systemic, Rosselkhoznadzor will consider imposing a ban on the import of vegetable products from these Turkish regions," the statement says.
Rosselkhoznadzor explains that phytosanitary control systematically reveals quarantine objects for the EEU member countries in fresh tomatoes from the Republic of Turkey. These are the South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta (Meyrick)) and western California (flower) thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis (Perg)). Besides, Pepino mosaic virus, Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) were found in Turkish products for which Rosselkhoznadzor imposed a temporary quarantine phytosanitary measure.
The infected products are shipped mainly from the provinces of Antalya and Izmir.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey has been officially notified of the current situation with the phytosanitary condition of tomatoes, but no information on measures taken by the Turkish side to prevent violations has been provided, Rosselkhoznadzor reported.
