Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Monitoring Service (Rosselkhoznadzor) imposes temporary restrictions on supplies of potatoes from one of the regions of Egypt from April 6 due to detection of harmful bacteria, according to the website of the agency.
The harmful bacterium Pseudomonas, which causes brown rot of potato and is included in the list of quarantine objects in the Eurasian Economic Community, was detected in one of the areas of cultivation in Egypt. However, the Egyptian side reported the absence of the pathogen in this area. The quarantine object poses a direct threat to a wide range of agricultural and industrial crops.
"Considering the above, Rosselkhoznadzor imposes temporary restrictions on supplies of potatoes to the Russian Federation from the Arab Republic of Egypt from April 6, 2021, produced in the said zone until complete elimination of the outbreak of the identified quarantine object for the EEC member states," the statement reads.
Brown bacterial rot of potatoes is a widespread disease, mainly in countries with warm and humid climates. It reduces yields on susceptible potato varieties by up to 50%. Storage losses can exceed 40%.
