The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan and the Russian company Russian Railways have agreed to prepare together for the gradual resumption of regular railway service. The ministry's press service announced this on Wednesday.
"An agreement has been reached on joint preparations for the gradual resumption of regular passenger rail communication between Uzbekistan and Russia as the epidemic situation normalizes," the statement said. Regular rail service between the countries was suspended in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This agreement was reached at a meeting of Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Sardor Umurzakov with a Russian delegation headed by CEO - Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov in Tashkent.
According to the press service of the ministry, Belozerov said that the Russian company is ready to participate in the construction of the Mazare-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railroad. "It is emphasized that the implementation of this project, forming a new architecture of transport communications in the region, will reduce by 30 percent the time and cost parameters of freight transportation from East and South Asia to the CIS and Europe and back," the ministry stated.
According to the press service, after the meeting, the Ministry of Labor of the republic and Russian Railways signed a memorandum on attracting citizens of Uzbekistan to work in the railway construction in Russia.
