It would be logical to confirm US President Joe Biden's words about the mutual understanding reached in the sphere of strategic stability by taking steps towards disarmament. This opinion was expressed by Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council.
"It is very encouraging that Biden emphasized the mutual understanding that has been reached in the sphere of strategic stability and appreciated the special role of both powers in this sphere on a global scale. After such words, it would be logical to take steps in the field of disarmament. We need to catch the word," he wrote on his Facebook page.
He considers it understandable that President Biden's voiced assessments of the outcome of the negotiations "differed from Russia in some ways."
"He spoke primarily to Americans, to his allies and critics in the United States and in Europe. Hence this emphasis on human rights themes and values, and in full loyalty to the journalistic pool - a complete contrast to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin's press conference," said the senator.
In his opinion, the Russian President's position was very strong, which was evident at the press conference following the summit. "He was not only confident and convincing, but perfectly prepared. He clearly took their side on most of the issues that the US side thought were more advantageous to them. First of all, it concerns the problem of cybersecurity, where there is now hope for the beginning of some kind of negotiation process as well," stressed the video speaker of the Federation Council.
Significance
Kosachev is convinced that the summit of the US and Russian Presidents turned out to be the most important event of Biden's European tour, "no matter how much the West tried to play down its significance, paying maximum attention to 'America's return' to its allies in Europe."
"The fates of the world, pardon my pathos, were decided in Geneva rather than in Brussels, in the circle of 'agreeables,'" Kosachev said.
According to the politician, the conversation between the two Presidents worked out, and "Biden's experience as a politician played a more important role than the ideological 'orders' from Washington and European politicians, in the spirit of which the discussions in Geneva were supposed to go."
