Lavrov Warns of Escalating Risks of Global Conflict

10 October 2023

The Western minority has triggered a significant crisis on the global stage, and the risks of a worldwide conflict are escalating. These concerns were voiced in an article authored by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov titled "Respecting the Principles of the UN Charter as the Key to International Peace and Stability."

"The belligerent and self-centered approach adopted by the Western minority has ignited a grave crisis in international relations, heightening the risks of a global conflict," the minister emphasized.

According to Lavrov, "there is a way out of the current situation." He emphasized, "Above all, it is important for everyone to recognize their responsibility for the fate of the world within the historical context, rather than solely in the context of temporary political considerations related to upcoming national elections."

The Russian foreign minister recalled that nearly 80 years ago, world leaders, while signing the UN Charter, "agreed to uphold the equality of all states, acknowledging the necessity of an equitable, polycentric world order as a safeguard for sustainability and security in their development." He also emphasized the importance of ensuring that "the essence of multipolarity enshrined in the UN Charter is put into practice."

Lavrov highlighted that "an increasing number of countries, representing the majority in the world, are actively seeking to bolster their sovereignty and safeguard their national interests, traditions, culture, and way of life."

He further emphasized that "many nations are unwilling to live under the dictates of others; instead, they seek friendship and trade with each other and the broader world – but always on equal terms and for mutual gain, within the context of the naturally evolving multipolar framework." Lavrov noted that this sentiment prevailed during recent summits such as BRICS, G20, and East Asia meetings.
